Year 6 children learn about the battle of the Somme.
This year marks the 100 anniversary of the battle of the Somme. Manchester is hosting the National Commemoration.
A Remembrance service at Manchester Cathedral will precede a procession through Manchester to Heaton Park. An evening of live performances will end the day of remembrance. As a lasting memorial The Path of the Remembered will be laid. This will be made up of memory squares individually designed and made by community groups, schools and others across the country. Children and parents in year 6 were invited to make their own memory square with the help of local historian Rob Thompson and artist Pascal Nichols. Rob brought along a selection of amazing artifacts including rifles, helmets and bombs from the Somme and his fascinating talk really brought the brutal story of the battle of the Somme to life. The children dedicated their tiles to fallen soldiers from the Blackley, Crumpsall and Moston areas.
Special thanks to Rob and Pascal and all the parents who came along to help with their children make the tiles, we had some amazing designs!
